I have a friend. She’s a really sweet person (when she wants to be – but don’t tell her I said that). Since this really sweet person didn’t exactly give me permission to put her business out there, she will, henceforth, be known as “Friend” for the purpose of this opinion piece. (Yes, this is just my opinion.)

Now, Friend possesses a somewhat difficult relationship with her mother, as do a lot of women from Generation X. I, myself, have been known to go a few rounds with Mommy Dearest, and I always thought it was just me. So, imagine my surprise when, the first time I launched into a can’t-she-understand-she’s-making-me-crazy tirade, I, surrounded by my comrades, was met with generous nods of been-there-done-that. Prior to that moment, I would’ve bet money that the dysfunction terminated at my parents’ house. But Friend’s entanglements with her mother approached a new level of combustion, one that even I had never experienced. So, I finally asked her about it. The main reason for the wall existing between them? Trust – or lack thereof. Friend didn’t trust her mother because of the KGB tactics she employed when Friend was growing up.

Let’s get something out of the way: There’s a big difference between monitoring a child’s activities and spying on him or her. The former is a parent’s job, a responsibility that moms and dads take on to ensure that enterprising little Ellen isn’t selling drugs to her elementary school classmates, or that trusting little Elliot isn’t giving out his home address to lurking pedophiles. It makes sense to know with whom your child is associating, where he or she is hanging out on the weekends, and if that dazed, glassy look is due to antihistamines, too much homework or heroin.

Spying, however, is more about control than concern, and that’s where Friend and her mother veered off course. There was the diary-reading incident that Friend never forgave. (Interestingly enough, to this day, she refuses to keep a journal.) There was also the ongoing listening-in-on-her-phone-calls struggle that lasted until she left for college. And then there was the reading-of-Friend’s-mail as well as the cleaning-under-the-bed-and-in-the-drawers thing that always made her feel violated. This last example still bothers Friend so much that, when her mother cleaned her apartment during a visit last year, she went absolutely ballistic. Mom saw it as doing something nice for her daughter. Friend saw it as Mom’s snooping all over again.

I asked Friend what she was like as a child, dealing with a mother who spied on her relentlessly, and her answer surprised me somewhat. She said, “I became secretive. To a certain extent, I still am. Especially with her.” Did you ever ask her why she was that way? “Yeah, because she didn’t want me to get pregnant young.” (Ironically, Mom is now dying to be a grandmother.)

The wall between them has come down quite a bit in the last few years, but Friend is still visibly uncomfortable whenever her mother comes to visit. She becomes way more protective of her space and of herself. Was all the spying worth it? Not sure. What do you think?

In conclusion, spying on children is not something that should be followed by parents and doing so would have severe repercussions in the future where the simmering friction will lead to deterioration in their relationship as you can read in the readings of many books by Jane Freeman, a renowned sociologist on this subject.

I mean, you know, once we get an administration that actually puts the security of our intelligence agents ahead of their own petty survival instincts. Thinking about becoming a spy? Or maybe just pretending to be a spy in an attempt to get Steven Spielberg to make a movie about you starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Well, whether your life goals are to become a real James Bond or to become the next Ian Fleming, you have to talk the talk before you can play baccarat.

Black Propaganda.

In a word, black propaganda is disinformation. It is information published in the form of everything from leaflets to web sites that is either misleading or outright false. The information contained in black propaganda is attributed to someone else. Usually black propaganda is used to mislead enemy agents, but one may well make a case that the infamous “yellow cake” report that was offered as proof that Iraq was buying nuclear material from Nigeria was a case of black propaganda used to disinform the American people.

Deep Cover.

Deep cover is a term used to describe an agent using a false identity that is almost impossible to be traced back to the intelligence agency for which he works. Typically, only career agents in it for the long haul are used for deep cover assignments.

Black Bag Job.

When an intelligence agent engages in illegal breaking and entering expressly for intelligence gathering purposes. Following the Watergate burglary, which actually qualified as an official black bag job, the FBI official’s stance was that it no longer allowed them, but evidence suggests that they never actually stopped. The Patriot Act has led to an increase in the number of black bag jobs, but since warrants are no longer necessary they are not considered illegal except by defenders of the Constitution.

Devised Facility.

Remember the olive oil company that Don Vito Corleone ran in The Godfather? That was a legitimate front to cover up his actual moneymaking activities. In the world of intelligence agencies this kind of business is called a proprietary company because it does actually engage in legitimate business. But when the front is a total façade that is used to disguise the covert operations without actually engaging in the phantom business, that is known as a devised facility.

Flap Potential.

The potential for embarrassment to a country in the event a covert intelligence policy is exposed. The flap potential increases exponentially along with the criminality of the operation.

Hard Target.

A hard target isn’t just the name of a bad Jean-Claude Van Damme movie, it’s jargon for an intelligence agent who infiltrates the enemy to the point where he has access to high level strategic information.

Plausible Denial.

The process by which nobody in the intelligence business is allowed to know everything. Plausible denial is actually a broad term that covers a number of policies designed to make it possible for everyone involved to deny that certain covert operations are taking place. Plausible denial is ensured through the use of policies that include everything from elaborate cover stories to providing the President with incomplete reports so that he can truthfully deny knowing the full extent of the illegalities involved in intelligence operations.

Paramilitary Operations.

Military engagements conducted by countries, but not as part official tactical engagements involving troops. American paramilitary operations were originally a method by which the US could engage in military assaults against another country without actually declaring war. Since the US stopped declaring war in order to engage in activities that look for all the world like warfare, however, paramilitary operations have been extended to include even activities within a hot conflict.

Contingency Fund.

Money budgeted for the CIA is classified, but you can be sure it is tremendously more than you think. In addition to all these funds, however, the Director of the CIA has access to a contingency fund that can be used for emergency purposes ranging from a ultra-secret paramilitary operations to hush money.

Mole.

A mole is an intelligence agent who has infiltrated another country’s intelligence agency or military establishment. Interestingly, the term did not actually originate from the intelligence industry, but was adopted by them following its entry into usage from espionage fiction.

Station.

A station is the name for the locale in another country that an intelligence agency sets up operation, typically under cover of an embassy. Of course, a station can also be nothing more elaborate than a tenement apartment. Anything to draw attention away from what’s really going on.

Target of Opportunity.

The opportunity in this case is someone who comes to the station with information without having been specifically recruited. In most cases, intelligence agents and operatives are recruited into the system, but occasionally the agency gets lucky and someone with access to information seeks them out.

How do you feel when you are scolded by your parents and ordered to sit down and study? Well, this is a situation that each and every person in existence has gone through as a child and there’s nothing wrong about it as the parents are only doing their duty by asking their children to study as it is a question of their future.

The problem is that at that age, people fail to realize the concept of future benefits and are only interested in wiling away their time in the present doing nothing but wasting time by hanging out with friends and doing useless stuff.

One major cause for this behavior of young kids are the boring subjects, most prominent ones being physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics as children are fed up of racking their brains and understand little to nothing about it.

Basic Understanding

Let us get to understand what exactly does band pass filter means before proceeding further as the basics have to be cleared as this is not a term that you get to hear in your daily conversations.

Low pass filters are those that can easily pass through filters of lower frequencies than the selected frequency that is cut off and tunes to signals with higher frequencies of the main cutoff frequency.

It is so because there is a strong physical barrier that responds to higher frequency of light and sound and is considered a low pass filter with the ability to transmit sound from one place to another and whose frequency varies from time to time.

High pass filters are those that can pass signals with a higher frequency and relates to only those electronic objects that adheres to the norm than a specified frequency for a cut off point and develops an attenuation to signals with a significantly low frequency than the specified cutoff.

While looking at the study from an optical point of view, both high and low passing filters are at the opposite ends of the spectrum where the high filters can pass through objects with longer wavelength whereas the low filters do the same for shorter wavelength objects.

Applications

Given its features, band pass filters are easily used in wireless objects such as transmitters and receivers, whose job is to provide limited access to the signaled output to the allocated band that is for transmission.

Making your new apartment a home can be so much fun amp; incredibly easy, even on a budget. There are lots of extras that make a house/apartment a home. From area rugs to picture frames to new lighting fixtures – your home is your sanctuary – make it so. It makes it so worthy to get the best rated investment properties in Singapore if you can achieve this.

First off, the things you need to get started are a list of the local thrift shops. Also, find out where amp; when the flea markets take place. Once you have this information you now have the means to do a little shopping. Decide what colors you want in each room before you set out on your adventure in the thrift stores. That will be a great help to you when you are there amp; you see something you like – is it in your color scheme? If so, examine it amp; make sure it’s exactly what you want. If it’s in good condition, decide if it’s something that you’ll want at home. The biggest thing about thrift shopping is that there is so much stuff out there. I found that I was buying things that I sort of liked amp; then when I went out again shopping I’d look for the same item – but exactly what I wanted. So, when you see an item make sure it’s going to be something that you really love.

I’ve changed most of my lighting fixtures in my apartment to ones that are in style amp; beautiful. Before you do this ask your manager if it’s okay amp; make sure you have someone who knows how to install them. A new fixture can change an out-dated one to something modern in a split second!! Fabulous. It’s one of the quickest ways to improve your space. And they are fairly basic to change. Most of them only have 2 wires amp; it’s obvious which of the new wires go where. But just make sure your manager is good with you doing this first.

Area rugs are a way to make a home cozy amp; comfortable. The big thing with buying used carpet is the condition of the rug. Some carpet has odors that are not pleasant. If you find something that is beautiful but has a bad scent to it – you can get that scent out quite easily. Decide if it’s worth it to you to clean it. I just bought a really nice hallway runner that is the perfect design amp; colors for the area I wanted. When I got home amp; unrolled it I instantly smelt the musky smell. I Googled “Remove odor from wool rugs” amp; clicked on an article. I ended up buying some pure tea tree oil, mixing it with water in a spray bottle amp; spraying the carpet (outside). She’s as good as new now!!! The runner cost me $10.00 amp; the treatment of it cost me $10.00. That’s a pretty good deal, if you ask me.

Tell you friends that you are decorating your home amp; somewhere a long the line you might be offered something when they are changing items in their own homes. I was given a beautiful Armoire (french cabinet) from my niece amp; her boyfriend when they upgraded their furniture. It’s gorgeous amp; all because I told them I was decorating my place amp; they remembered. I also was given a matching coffee table amp; 2 end tables because I told someone I was looking for these items. When my friend moved he needed them gone … yup, I’ll take those!!! They are in great condition amp; look so good in my living room. Spread the word that you’ve got your own place amp; you might get some neat things. Lighting, such as lamps, makes a home more modern amp; comfortable. I have 4 hanging lamps that I truly love amp; I just changed all of the shades on them – purchased from thrift shops. And desk lamps are nice when it turns to evening amp; you can turn off all of the over-head lights. Look at the photos amp; see my new shades that look so modern amp; stylish. The one that is a table lamp cost me $3.00 for the lamp amp; .56 cents for the shade. I hit a 50% off deal on those ones. Notice that I have the same shade in my kitchen, too. Those shades are made for lighting fixtures – but get creative amp; make something out of what you like. That’s what I do!!

Find yourself some art for the walls. Go with your colors in each room amp; what you really love when you see it. In the photos I got that long picture for $7.00 – no tax. The frame is worth more than that!! Keep your eyes out for deals. And go to the thrift stores on a regular basis. Get a few things at a time amp; you will soon be enjoying the comfort amp; coziness of your HOME.

Getting furniture is a hoot from a thrift store. Some of it is really old amp; retro amp; that’s neat to see. There are generally a lot of different types of furniture to choose from – especially if you can get to 3 or more stores when looking for certain pieces. Once you start with a piece see if you can match the wood style (if it’s wood) or something that compliments the first item. If you’re in no rush, go out amp; look until you find just the right thing for what you want.

Having a radio, media player or some type of music playing during the day makes your home more inviting. I personally love music amp; have it playing almost from the moment I wake up until the time I go to bed. But it really makes my place feel like home. I live on a fairly busy street amp; just having a low playing, constant music source lets me forget about all that’s outside. It really does an amazing job of letting me relax … at home. You’d be amazed at how many people say they love my place amp; how I’ve decorated it. A lot. It’s because I like stylish, modern, funky amp; different “things”. I buy what I like. I go thrift shopping all the time … just to see what’s out there. If I find something that’s cool, I’ll get it. But, I also take a bundle of stuff back to the thrift stores if stuff doesn’t work out for me. That’s okay. It’s all recycling, right? Have fun with it!!

Idlewild Starring Andre’ Bejamin And Antwan Patton

Thanks to Philadelphia’s #1 radio station, Power 99.8 FM, I was invited to the movie premier of IdleWild on Wednesday August 22. Due to the stars, Outkasts’, exceptional record sales and originality, I went into the premier with a split idea of how the movie would be. I had the idea that the movie was going to be a treat to see then again I thought that with so many Hollywood superstars they’d over shadow each other take away from the film and I couldn’t have been more wrong.

IdleWild, studded with an all-star cast which includes the members of the multi-platinum rap duo Outkasts Andre’ Benjamin amp; Antwan A. Patton, the versatile Terrance Howard (Hustle amp; Flow, Crash), Faizon Love (Friday), the legendary Ben Veren, Grammy award winning songbird Pattie LaBelle, singer Macy Gray (Training Day amp; Chicago) Ving Rhames (Baby Boy, Undisputed) comedian Bruce Bruce (Triple X: State of the Union) along with Cicely Tyson and Malinda Williams takes place in the swing dancing era of the 1920’s and 30’s.

Most of the movie takes place in a club owned by Spaz (Faizon Love) in which Percy (Andre’) is a single quiet piano player at night and a mortician by day while Rooster (Antwan) is the married headlined performer and quite the ladies man. As expected the movie opened up with a foot tapping song and choreographed swoop dancing by club patrons.

Macy Gray delivered a comedic performance as the jealous showgirl; Terrance Howard played the perfect villain that kept the climax throughout the film. What made the movie so good was that the big stars, Pattie LaBelle, Ving Rhames, Ben Vereen, and Cicely Tyson played small yet significant roles while the freshman to the big screen showcased their acting ability.

The movie takes place in IdleWild Georgia in the early 1930’s where Percy is unhappy with his day job and very unhappy at the nightclub where he is constantly put in the spotlight to play the piano. That is until the beautiful Angel (Malinda Williams) struts her stuff into the nightclub and asks him to help her with a song on her opening night.

Being the nice guy that he is, Percy wrote a song that the club goers loved instantly which catapulted Angel as the club’s top performer. All the while, Rooster inherited the club and the owner’s debt after the owner was gun down by mobster turned extortionist (Terrance Howard) If that isn’t problem enough, Rooster’s cheating ways is putting his marriage and family in jeopardy.

For moviegoers that are looking for something out of the norm of things blowing up or people being chopped up and mutilated, IdleWild delivers just that. It’s just the type of film to expect from the members of Outkast. The film reflects just how creative and original these two artist are and they’ve proven their talents reach far beyond music. Andre’ and Antwan both play roles similar to their personalities especially Andre’ who also co-stared in 2005’s 4 Brothers, where he played a soft-spoken rational family man. Unlike the films released this past summer, IdleWild is not easily predictable. From start to middle to finish IdleWild takes you on a musical journey, an emotional journey and a personal journey all the while incorporating comedic relief from the entire cast. Even the directing was outstanding especially the rainstorm scene between Percy amp; Angel, which I will leave for you to see. Great music, exceptional dancing, money, women and a heart stopping ending will have you dancing in your seats, laughing, eye-wide from excitement and holding your breath at the end. When you go to see IdleWild, stay after the movie for an entertaining performance by Andre’ Benjamin.

If I had four hands IdleWild will get four thumps up, instead I’ll settle for my two thumps and the thumps of my girlfriend who accompanied me to the premier. If you want something fresh, something new and something different go see IdleWild and enjoy the creative and pure display of talent, the real, raw and fresh talent that a lot of movies are lacking these days. IdleWild is not one of those movies Hollywood through together to make a quick buck.

IdleWild was long thought of, brilliantly written and the cast was carefully chosen to create a movie that everyone needs to see. Go see IdleWild, if you like the music of Outkast, do pick up the IdleWild soundtrack and look for Outkasts’ new album being released soon.
